Shade changes what grass wants

Turf growing under or near tree cover doesn't behave like turf in full sun. It needs less frequent mowing, tolerates a slightly taller cut better, and is more prone to thinning if it's mowed too short. If part of the yard sits under a heavy canopy, a shade-tolerant grass blend in that section will hold up far better than whatever is planted in the open areas.

Mow across the slope, not straight down it

On sloped ground, mowing up and down the hill is harder to control and tends to scalp the high points while leaving the low points long. Mowing across the slope, on a stable line, gives a more even cut and is safer footing for anyone on a walk-behind mower.

Budget more time for fall leaves

Properties near tree lines see a lot more leaf volume than open lots, and a thick layer left on the lawn through November can smother grass and encourage fungal issues underneath. Clearing leaves in a couple of passes through the season, rather than one big cleanup in December, keeps the lawn breathing underneath.

Watch drainage at the tree line

Where lawn meets woods, water often collects and drains more slowly. If a strip along the property edge stays soggy longer than the rest of the yard, it's worth checking whether grading or a simple drainage fix would help before that area turns to mud or moss.
